Study Day 2023!

After the huge success of the Study Day in 2022, the event is back and will be bigger and better than ever. Come and join ACPOHE in Birmingham for what promises to be a great event!

The theme of our day is “Breaking Down Barriers”, focusing on obstacles that can limit practice in Occupational Health and Ergonomics. Join us to explore strategies and solutions that empower and assist individuals in these contexts.

We will have experts on hand to clarify how work has changed in the past few years, current legislation and discuss the implications of the changes in the HCPC standards and what that means for AHPs.

There will be plenty of opportunities for networking throughout the day and the evening before the event. The afternoon will be dedicated to fun, interactive and informative workshops run by experts in the field and bespoke to your personal needs and interests.

We also invite any participant to showcase a poster for the day. This can be an academic poster to show research that they have been involved in, presentation of under or post graduate work or a way to share project work or case studies that you feel might be of interest to others. If you would like to display a poster, join us for our webinar  on 17th August from 12:00 - 13:00 for our top tips to help you understand how to create the best posters.

This year our event sponsors are back and will be on hand to demonstrate products, arrange in-house training for your workplace and attendees will be in for a chance of winning some great prizes too.

All attendees will have a chance to enter into prize draws to win fabulous prizes such as an Adapt Office Chair from ErgoChair! Just visit our sponsor stands on the day during the breaks for your chance to win.

Updated plan of ACPOHE Study Day

The Plan For The Day

Note that the afternoon sessions have changed slightly from 1400 to accommodation changes in rooms.

Our study days are always a great opportunity for networking, and there will be plenty of opportunities to connect with others in the industry. Our committee members will also be on hand all day to chat and help people understand how they can break down the barriers to get more involved in ACPOHE. This might be through research, offering student placements, joining working groups to develop guidance, or simply participating in courses or webinars. If you would like to be on the committee, please let us know and speak to us about what we do.

08.30 Registration and Coffee

Your first chance for a catch up with colleagues.

09.15 Welcome

Our chair, Nicola Suckley, will formally open the event with a few words.

9.20 Our First Speakers – Three representatives from the CSP DisAbility Network

Greet Jannsens

Greet graduated in Belgium with a BSC Physiotherapy in 1998, then working in private practice for 10 years, sharpening her interest and skills in respiratory physiotherapy with children and adults, alongside neuro development. Following her move to the UK in 2008, Greet followed her passion in children’s physiotherapy.

In November 2019, Greet had a stroke in the medulla oblongata, affecting her mobility and causing chronic pain in the left side of her body. After returning to children’s physiotherapy, Greet realised how important it is to empathise with patients and families, particularly where neurological events changed their lives at birth or throughout their young lives.

Her hearing impairment, along with the newer disability, means that she can contribute to the quality of newly qualified physiotherapists with a different ability and to those aspiring to become a physiotherapist. Becoming a convenor with the CSP DisAbility network has helped Greet make a difference to the educational, access and application experience, seeking a balance with prospective employers towards reasonable adjustments.

Stephanie Phillips

Stephanie Phillips

Steph Phillips qualified as a physiotherapist in 1995. Her career has included Clinical specialisms in Adolescent medicine and Adults with long term pain and fatigue, as well as developing interests in hypermobility and preparing for adulthood.

During this time she undertook her SEND Law training, represented parent carers at a strategic level within education, health and care as a parent representative for her local parent carer forum and acted as an Expert by Experience for NHSE CETR panels within the East of England.
During this journey, she also recognised her own neurodivergence and was diagnosed aged 49 as autistic.

Steph now works as Coproduction and Engagement Lead for Children’s Services Central Bedfordshire Council working across the SEND partnership of education, health and care. Steph leads on areas within the SEND Strategy, including Preparing for Adulthood and Autism pathways. Steph is passionate about coproduction, person centred care and the value lived experience brings to the table in service development at a strategic, operational and individual level.

I work as a physiotherapist employed by Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, specialising in musculoskeletal medicine and more specifically in persistent pain management, working with individuals with longer-term persistent/ chronic pain. I have 12 years of experience working in this speciality, moving into my current role as an advanced clinical practitioner around 4 years ago. I have a small private practice, mostly specialising in trauma as part of a multidisciplinary team, working with case managers, occupational therapists and clinical psychologists.

Whilst working in the NHS, I have been a CSP workplace steward for over 10 years, stepping down in early 2022. During this period, I have been I have supported staff in workplace issues, providing representation. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to support colleagues and collaborate with managers on a wide range of issues.

I have been a member of the CSP’s LGBTQIA+ network since 2018. During this period I have had the privilege to collaborate with network members on a variety of issues, including the CSP’s Equality, Diversity and Belonging strategy which was published in 2021. I have participated in a number of podcasts reflecting on my experiences of being a gay male as an AHP. I have also had the opportunity to lead a panel session discussing LGBTQIA and sport. I have recently taken the role of vice chair and I am thrilled to represent this amazing network.

I recently completed an MSc in Professional Practice (Healthcare) completing primary qualitative research in chronic pain reconceptualisation. Chronic pain reconceptualisation is a key component to my own clinical practice. What you said about Study Day 2022

We had some great feedback about last year's Study Day:

Very memorable event, has the potential of having more active members which can lead to more research.

Brilliant day, great opportunity to network and focus my development. Lots of food for thought. Thank you all.

A very well organised day which I thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend.

From a student perspective who had very limited knowledge of physiotherapy in occupational health and ergonomics, I thought the day was really informative and interesting!
